Hidden Anatolia
-
One of the frustrations of living in Turkey is that people always want to ask me what Istanbul is like, as if it were the only city in this vast and varied land. I live about as far from Istanbul as Glasgow is from London, and although I love visiting Istanbul, there’s so much more to Turkey, so many treasures that even the most adventurous tourists rarely encounter. I see Turkish tourism adverts featuring whirling dervishes and belly dancers; I cringe in frustration. There has to be a more balanced way to show what what life in this complex country is really like.
Every time people ask me about Istanbul, I try to tell them how beautiful and mysterious the rest of Turkey is, but my explanations fall short. This is my attempt to get out there and show the world exactly what I mean.
